How does the search work?

You pick a photo, confirm consent, and the image is matched against public images on the web. The app shows you how many matches were found; the results themselves open in your browser.

Do I need the person's permission?

Yes, unless it is a photo of yourself. Every search asks you to confirm that the photo is your own or that you have the person's explicit written consent. You also confirm you are 18 or older.

How long are results kept?

Seven days. After that the result page expires and is permanently removed. The app keeps only the match count and the date.

Does the app store the matched photos?

No. Matches open in your browser and the app never saves them. Only the number of matches is kept on your device.

What makes a good photo to search?

A sharp, front-facing photo where the face is clearly visible. If no clear face is found, the app tells you and no credit is spent on a failed detection.

Terms of Service — Unscanny

1. Acceptance

By downloading, installing, or using Unscanny ("the app", "the service"), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

2. Face Search — Permitted Use

The face search feature may only be used to search for yourself or for individuals who have given you explicit permission to search on their behalf. By initiating a face search, you represent and warrant that:

The photo you submit is of yourself, or
The person depicted in the photo is an adult (18 or older), and you have obtained that person's explicit consent for you to search for them

Searching for another person without their consent is strictly prohibited and may violate applicable laws including but not limited to the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and various state and national privacy laws. Submitting a photo of a minor as the subject of a search is always strictly prohibited, even with purported consent.

Unscanny is for personal, non-commercial use only. You may not use Unscanny as, or in connection with, a background check, consumer reporting, identity verification, or investigative service. You may not use results for any employment, housing, credit, insurance, or other eligibility decision covered by the U.S. Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) or similar laws. Unscanny is not a consumer reporting agency and does not provide a "consumer report" for FCRA purposes. You may not use Unscanny for bulk, automated, or API-driven searches, or resell, license, or redistribute results to any third party.

3. Prohibited Uses

You may not use Unscanny to:

Stalk, harass, or surveil any person
Identify individuals without their knowledge or consent
Collect or aggregate information about third parties
Violate any person's right to privacy
Use results in any discriminatory manner
Engage in doxxing or any form of targeted harassment
Violate any applicable local, national, or international law or regulation
Submit images containing minors for face search
Attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or abuse the service's APIs

4. Account Suspension

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate access for any device we reasonably believe is being used in violation of these terms, without prior notice. Abuse reports may be submitted to unscannyinfo@gmail.com.

5. Accuracy of Results

Face search results are probabilistic and may be inaccurate. A match does not confirm identity. You must not make decisions affecting any person's rights, employment, housing, credit, or safety based solely on face search results. We make no warranty as to the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any search result.

6. Third-Party Services

Face search results are provided by FaceCheck.id. We are not responsible for the accuracy, availability, or content of results provided by third-party services. Use of those results is subject to FaceCheck.id's own terms of service.

7. Disclaimer of Warranties

The service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted or error-free.

8. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the service, even if advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability for any claim shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.

9. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Unscanny and its operators from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including legal fees) arising from your use of the service in violation of these terms or applicable law.

10. Governing Law

These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with applicable law. Users in the European Union retain all rights granted under EU consumer protection law regardless of any governing law clause.

11. Changes to Terms

We may update these terms at any time. Material changes will be communicated via in-app notice with reasonable advance notice. Continued use of the service after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
